For the fans of Classic Horror!
Come plunge into the bewildering world of werewolves, ghosts, psychos, zombies, demons, evil elves and things that should not be named.
Follow five friends to the threshold of hell in “Portico,” a haunted house story based on a real location an abandoned observatory on a hill in South Africa.
Walk alongside a young boy bent on killing his brother’s murderer in “The Nature of the Beast.” Even if said murderer turns out to be a mythical African monster, a hybrid werewolf / lion / hyena.
Beware your own demons in “The Great Wall of Rubin,” a tragic story about an alcoholic who can no longer run (or drive) away from his past.
Meet a man whose fear of Christmas is more than justified in “Beyond the Ornate Tree.”
And meet Rupert, who’s tired of the zombie-infested fashion industry, in “Fashionably Undead.”
These twelve stories explore the theme of lost hope and the on-going struggle to free ourselves from despair. A true journey through the dark.

Interview with the Author
What makes this short story collection so special?
Joe Mynhardt Lost in the Dark is for readers who enjoy old-school horror, but with a unique twist. What else can you expect when you’ve got an evil Santa Clause and zombie fashion models? Great short fiction also reveals a glimpse of the author’s world, so expect some African legends and actual haunted buildings.
What’s the story behind the “Portico” novella?
Joe Mynhardt A local ghost hunting group asked me to write a screenplay set in a haunted observatory for them, with the idea of turning it into a low budget Horror movie, of course. I stayed quite a few nights inside the location, which is extremely haunted, so it didn’t take me long to come up with the story’s demonic plot. We were only a few days from starting filming when we lost the right to use the building. At least I still have a great story and some awesome memories/nightmares from this experience. Plus, hearing actors rehearse words you wrote and bringing your characters to life, that’s one hell of a treat for any author.

3 1/2 stars. I liked this collection of stories. Like most anthologies I had my favorites and not so favorites. I think I was expecting too much and that's where my disappointment lies. Not with the tales, which were good and creepy, but I wanted more location. I love feeling the history of places as much as I love the characters and I got just bits and pieces here. What I did get I had to Google. Yep, I know, "but it's short stories, what the heck do you expect?" My answer would simply be more. Mr. Mynhardt is a talented author and I will be reading more from him. Yep, I'd recommend this book and author.Product details

Lost in the Dark A Collection of Short Stories edition by Joe Mynhardt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
OVERALL REVIEW
"Lost" is a worthwhile, traditional-horror anthology, one that I enjoyed a lot. Every story, even the few I had personal preference issues with, had something to recommend them. Good stuff, this - worth owning.
STANDOUT STORIES
1.) "Beyond the Ornate Tree" Christmas takes on new elements of gory terror as a psychiatric patient (Jim) and his doctor converse, so Jim can resolve his Yuletide "issues". Fun read, laughed out loud (in a good way) at the finish.
2.) "The Way Back" Off-beat, interesting story about a paranormal investigator (Thomas Sanders) whose most recent investigation - in a ghost-notorious prison - may an unforeseen impact on his life.
3.) "Fashionably Undead" An emasculated husband - Rupert - disgusted by a zombie-models-on-the-runway fashion show, decides to finally do something about it. This is an especially good tale, with a cliffhanger-ish ending that is memorable and effective.
4.) "Come All to the River of Death" A ghost hunter (Henry Taylor) gets more than he anticipated while investigating a particularly thrilling, rich-with-horrible-history house. Fun, phantasmagoric work, this.
5.) "Lost in the Dark" Fairy tale-esque tale about a kidnapped girl (Hanifa) who not only tries to escape her supernatural captor, but rescue others as well. Tone-effective, entertaining.
6.) "Rise, Dead Man" A drug-addicted grave robber, hounded by one of his victims, tries to atone for his latest crime. Another tone-effective work, with an especially good ending.
7.) "Zombie Mischief" Fun cautionary tale about being a grisly joker.
8.) "The Nature of the Beast" A young man hunts the nightmarish creature that killed his brother and some of their neighbors. "Nature," well-written and gripping, stands out for its unexpected finish, which echoes the feel of an African-village fable.

Joe Mynhardt is a South African writer of horror with more than 50 published short stories to his credit. He is also the owner and operator of Crystal Lake Publishing, publishers of horror and dark fantasy. Find out more at www.joemynhardt.com.
Lost In the Dark A Collection of Short Stories contains a dozen example's of Joe's writing covering a wide variety of horror tropes.
"The Great Wall of Rubin" - Rubin, a recovering alcoholic goes to a meeting four months sober. His evening doesn't exactly go as planned.
"Beyond the Ornate Tree" - The protagonist is a grown man scared of Christmas. When he has a breakthrough with his therapist and we learn why, hell I'd be scared of Christmas, too.
"Portico" - A group of friends become trapped in an abandoned observatory with a bloody past.
"The Way Back" - A fairly entertaining story of a paranormal investigator. Inspired by watching too many episodes of Ghost Adventures.
"Always Come Back" - A twisted little tale which started as an exercise on mywriterscircle.com.
"Fashionable Undead" - I think this story may feature the most unusual use of zombies, EVER. A fun read.
"Come All To the River of Death" - Joe dreamt this story in it's entirety. The result is a mostly entertaining haunted mansion tale with a number of little twists. I loved the subtlety of the line where the Doctor says, "I managed to save your eyes."
"Forgive Me Now" - Another story that came out of a writing challenge at mywriterscircle.com about a marital spat gone awry.
"Lost In the Dark" - A young girl becomes trapped with others in a strange man's basement somewhere in a shadow infested forest where no one would dare to look for them.
"Rise, Dead Man" - A so-so story featuring grave robbing as a career choice.
"Zombie Mischief" - Pranking with zombie parts.
"The Nature of the Beast" - The collection closes with Joe's take on the werewolf tale.
Joe has a very simple writing style, I'd have to say it's capable, but not very challenging. As a result, so are his stories. Although, not marketed as such, Lost In the Dark A Collection of Short Stories is more suited to the YA audience and can serve as an introduction to horror for a younger audience.
Published by Crystal Lake Publishing, Lost In the Dark A Collection of Short Stories, is available now both in paperback and e-book formats.
I must admit, I do not have high expectations when I read a new author, but Joe Mynhardt's 'Lost in The Dark' exceeded my expectations. I was suprised with the diversity of his stories. The book itself was a nice balance of intriguing stories which is kind of rare in short story compilations nowadays. I look forward to following Joe's career and patiently waiting for new stories.
